Annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Community Caroling

Nantucket

Starting at 5:00 PM

Nantucket Noel begins the day after Thanksgiving with the eagerly awaited Christmas Tree Lighting & Caroling ceremony. Main Street--closed to vehicular traffic--teems with  locals and visitors alike who gather in anxious expectation to chant along with our venerable Town Crier as he begins the traditional countdown. 10-9-8!  At its culmination, over 150 balsam trees magically illuminate and our central cobblestone thoroughfare is bathed in a blaze of colored lights.  The enchantment intensifies as the jubilant sound of traditional holiday carols--led by the Accidentals & Naturals a capella group--fills the air, marking the start of Nantucket Noel--a month chock full of festivities to delight one and all.

Nov25

16th Annual Nantucket Atheneum Cold Turkey Plunge

Nantucket

Starting at 10:00 AM

Hundreds of spectators and swimmers--some in wacky wetsuits and festive, funky swimwear--brave the frigid waters of Nantucket Harbor on Thanksgiving morning to benefit the Weezie Library for Children. (To enhance the festivities, there's even an actual turkey mascot--bedecked in his own finery--trotting along the beach!) Individual "plungers" and teams solicit sponsors to donate to their completed "plunge." Complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and pastries are generously provided by local businesses. You won't want to miss this "theatrical" fundraiser held rain or shine at Children's Beach.
