Featured in the exhibit are marbles with intriguing names, marbles were named for their use as well as for their appearance. Nantucket Daffodil Weekend 2016

Nantucket

From the first Daffodil Show on Nantucket in 1974, the festival has grown to include many more activities, and surely more daffodils. The tradition was first sponsored by the Nantucket Garden club and was highlighted by the planting of daffodils along Milestone Road. The group had a goal of someday reaching one million daffodils. With the help of island residents and professional landscapers, that goal has been far surpassed. It is estimated from early April to mid-May, three million daffodils bloom and help to decorate present-day Nantucket.

The Daffodil Festival’s grand event held on Saturday - is the Annual Antique Car Parade, which features over 100 daffodil-bedecked vintage cars (pre-registration necessary for participation). After winding through town and across the island to the charming village of Siasconset, participants join residents and visitors for the Annual Daffodil Tailgate Picnic. Held on the lush lawns leading into the village, the picnic boasts fare ranging from elaborate gourmet cuisine served on fine china to box lunches and burgers. Other highlights include the Nantucket Garden Club’s Annual Daffodil Show, Children’s Daffodil Parade, Daffy Hat Pageant and Daffodil Dog Parade.

Beethoven's Ninth Experience

Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street

Starting at 7:30 PM

Vienna. May 7, 1824. The Kärntnertortheater was packed. It had been twelve long years since Beethoven’s last symphony premiere and people couldn’t wait to hear his Ninth
It featured Vienna’s best soloists, a spectacular chorus and the largest orchestra the composer had ever assembled. Michael Umlauf was the official conductor. Beethoven’s last attempt to conduct an orchestra had been disastrous. You see, the great composer was now completely deaf. On this day, he was only to give the tempos at the beginning of every part.

At the end of the scherzo, the audience broke into wild applause. But, Beethoven couldn’t hear it. Finally, one of the soloists gently turned him toward the audience to receive their approval. It was then they realized how profoundly deaf he was. For the rest of the night, they waved their hands, hats and handkerchiefs in the air and rose for five ovations to praise the miraculous work.

The story of the premiere gives us goose bumps. How Beethoven got to this point is an equally amazing story we’ll share with you through anecdotes, videos and live musical examples with the orchestra. Then you’ll hear what Beethoven never did. The greatest feel-good symphony of all time. Beethoven’s Ninth: the Choral Symphony.

Visitors will discover the glamour, luxury and artistry of cinematic couture. Five centuries of fashion and style as interpreted by award-winning costume designers and worn by our favorite stars will be on display along with props, movie clips and photos and movie memorabilia.

Costumes play a critical role in the success of any period film. They set the scene and establish authenticity and ambience. They also reveal clues about a character’s status, age, class and wealth as well as his or her role in the story. Such is the case with the 43 costumes featured in the exhibition, CUT!
